چکیده

Presuming weak collisional interactions to exchange the kinetic energy between dark matter and baryonic matter in a galaxy cluster, we re-examine the effectiveness of this process in several ‘cooling flow’ galaxy clusters using available X-ray observations and infer an upper limit on the heavy dark matter particle (DMP)−proton cross section σxp. With a relative collisional velocity V−dependent power-law form of σxp = σ0(V/10 km s−1)a where a ≤ 0, our inferred upper limit is σ0/mx ∼ 2 × 10−25 cm GeV−1 withmx being the DMP mass. Based on a simple stability analysis of the thermal energy balance equation, we argue that the mechanism of DMP−baryon collisional interactions is unlikely to be a stable nongravitational heating source of intracluster medium (ICM) in inner core regions of ‘cooling flow’ galaxy clusters.

Constraints on the interaction between dark matter and Baryons from cooling flow clusters.

Other nongravitational heating processes are needed to resolve the disagreement between the absence of cool gas components in the centers of galaxy clusters revealed recently by Chandra and XMM observations and the expectations of conventional radiative cooling models. We propose that the interaction between dark matter and baryonic matter may act as an alternative for the reheating of intraclu...

Constraining the Collisional Nature of the Dark Matter Through Observations of Gravitational Wakes

We propose to use gravitational wakes as a direct observational probe of the collisional nature of the dark matter. We calculate analytically the structure of a wake generated by the motion of a galaxy in the core of an X-ray cluster for dark matter in the highly-collisional and collisionless limits. We show that the difference between these limits can be recovered from detailed X-ray or weak l...

Dynamical limits on galactic winds, halo machos and intergalactic globular clusters

We argue that any violent galactic winds following early epoch of star bursts would significantly weaken the potentials of galaxies, and leave lasting signatures such as a lowered dark halo density and preferentially radial/escaping orbits for halo tracers such as globular clusters. A galaxy is disintegrated if more than half of its dynamical mass is blown off. The presence of dense halos in ga...

Neutrinos as cluster dark matter

The dynamical mass of clusters of galaxies, calculated in terms of modified Newtonian dynamics, is a factor of two or three times smaller than the Newtonian dynamical mass but remains significantly larger than the observed baryonic mass in the form of hot gas and stars in galaxies. Here I consider further the suggestion that the undetected matter might be in the form of cosmological neutrinos w...

Fe b 20 01 Global Probes of the Impact of Baryons on Dark Matter Halos

The halo mass function, dn/dM , predicted by hierarchical clustering models can be measured indirectly using dynamical probes like the distribution of gravitational lens image separations, dn/d∆θ, or halo circular velocities, dn/dv c. These dynamical variables depend on the halo structure as well as the halo mass. Since baryonic physics, particularly cooling, significantly modifies the central ...
